Access to Higher Education is a Level 3 qualification created for adults aged 19+ who are ready to take the next step towards university. Whether you’re returning to learning or changing career direction, these courses provide a structured and supportive way to prepare for higher education.

You’ll study a subject linked to your future degree while developing key academic skills like writing, research and critical thinking. With a wide choice of subject areas available, Access courses are recognised by universities across the UK and open the door to a variety of degree options.

What are the entry requirements?

Most learners are expected to have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above. However, we understand that everyone’s journey is different. If you don’t currently meet these requirements, your application may still be considered based on relevant work or life experience.

Before enrolling, it’s important to check that your chosen Access to HE course meets the entry criteria for the university degree you plan to apply for.

Our Access to Higher Education courses are delivered fully online, giving you the flexibility to study at a time and place that suits you. You’ll follow a structured learning plan with clear deadlines to help you stay on track throughout your studies.

All course materials are accessed through an online learning platform, which is available 24/7 on desktop, tablet or mobile. This allows you to balance your studies around work, family and other commitments while still progressing steadily.

As a guide, you should expect to spend around 10 hours a week during term time over the course of 1 year – this includes studying the course materials, completing assignments and carrying out independent research.

Most learners complete their course within 9–12 months, depending on how much time they can commit each week.

Assessment is completed through coursework rather than exams. You’ll complete a variety of assignments such as essays, reports, presentations and case studies, designed to prepare you for university-style learning.

Your work will be assessed by experienced tutors, with quality checks carried out both internally and by the awarding organisation to ensure high academic standards.

The duration of your course will depend on your pace of study. Many students complete their diploma within 9 months, although you will need to be engaged in learning for a minimum period of 6 months before certification can be awarded.

Yes, there is a minimum study period before you can achieve your qualification – 6 months. This ensures you have fully developed the knowledge and academic skills required for higher education.

Yes, you’ll be supported by experienced tutors throughout your course. Support is flexible, with sessions available to accecss during the day, evenings and weekends to fit around your commitments. Many tutors will be able to meet at times that suit you.

You’ll also receive detailed summative feedback on your assignments to help you improve and build confidence as you progress.

Your course fee includes everything you need to succeed, including full access to learning materials, tutor support, assessment and external moderation. There is a fee of £160 for registration as AIM AWARDS charge this for their external verification and certification. We arrange this on your behalf and we can arrange payment plans if you need support.

An Access to Higher Education Diploma is made up of 60 credits. This includes:

  • 45 graded credits in your chosen subject area.
  • 15 ungraded credits focused on study skills and preparing for university-level learning.
  • This structure ensures you develop both subject knowledge and the academic skills needed for success in higher education.
